New beginnings are complicated. They can be sad, exciting, stressful - wrapped up in anxiety and opportunity. They can be a defining moment, or a moment we refuse to let define us. New beginnings have come to me in various forms; relationships ending or starting, grief, or reshaping my relationship with something intangible (like music) to give myself a fresh start and perspective. This record itself is a new beginning for Jake Swamp and the Pine. It’s an opportunity to usher in the vulnerability, honesty, and transparency I’m now giving into each and every song. I’ve spent the last year in therapy, reading, engaging with philosophy, having open conversations with friends and family about how I’m feeling, and how they’re feeling. All of those conversations and thoughts were channeled into the music.
Wish You Well - the title track - is an acknowledgment that in some new beginnings it’s hard to just move on. Moving on completely and harboring resentment or anger do not have to be mutually exclusive, and that’s okay.
